This week I introduced the VA Hiring Integrity Act of 2026 to prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs from hiring or retaining individuals who have knowingly committed fraud involving federal funds. The legislation responds to a 2023 VA Inspector General report that identified four individuals on the Veterans Health Administration payroll who appeared on the HHS OIG exclusion list, including one convicted of health care fraud. Under the bill, individuals would be barred from VA employment if they have been convicted of certain crimes involving federal funds, found civilly liable under the False Claims Act, or excluded from federal health care programs. The legislation also includes an internal grievance process to protect due process.
I will prohibit the Department of Veterans Affairs from hiring or retaining individuals who have knowingly committed fraud involving federal funds, including people convicted of certain federal-funds crimes, found liable under the False Claims Act, or excluded from federal health care programs, while providing an internal grievance process.
