Dingell made a broad federal House promise to support public education and educational opportunity, not to enact one narrowly defined program. During her first House term she voted for the Every Student Succeeds Act, which became law in 2015 and reauthorized major K-12 public school and opportunity programs. Later, while still serving in Congress, she also voted for the American Rescue Plan, which became law and provided major funding for K-12 schools, Head Start, special education, higher education, and learning recovery. Some broader Pre-K, caregiving, and older-adult-related Build Back Better provisions were only partially enacted, but the core promise to support public schools, higher education, teachers, and educational opportunity was fulfilled through enacted federal legislation with her direct vote.
