I will never give up my fight to ensure Dreamers permanent status and a pathway to citizenship
Fight to ensure Dreamers receive permanent status and a pathway to citizenship.
Occurrences
Evidence
H.R.1589 was introduced on February 26, 2025, remains in introduced status, and its cosponsor list includes Adriano Espaillat. The bill is the American Dream and Promise Act of 2025, a direct Dreamers pathway-to-status measure.
On July 25, 2025, Espaillat joined the reintroduction of H.R. 4696, the registry bill, which the press release says would create a legal path to lawful permanent residence and a pathway to citizenship for long-term residents, including immigrant youth raised in America.
On May 20, 2026, the Appropriations Democrats said Republicans' 2027 Legislative Branch bill 'does nothing to allow Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) recipients to work' and that Espaillat opposed it as subcommittee ranking member. The same markup also rejected a Democratic amendment to allow DACA recipients, also known as Dreamers, to work in the Legislative Branch.
Assessments
Espaillat has continued to fight for Dreamers through federal legislative activity, including cosponsoring the American Dream and Promise Act of 2025, joining a 2025 registry/pathway bill, and opposing 2026 appropriations language that failed to help DACA recipients. However, the promised outcome was permanent status and a pathway to citizenship for Dreamers, and the cited measures were not enacted. This supports serious effort but not fulfillment.
