Evidence
Rep. Teresa Leger Fernández and Rep. Dan Newhouse introduced a resolution to designate May 5, 2026, as a National Day of Awareness for Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. Leger Fernández said the crisis exists because Congress has not created or enforced laws to protect Indigenous women and children from predators and said the nation has a moral responsibility to invest in services for Indian Country so there are no more stolen sisters and no more stolen joy.
Leger Fernández, along with bipartisan co-sponsors, introduced H.R. 7490, the Tribal Warrant Fairness Act, to grant the U.S. Marshal Service authority to execute arrest warrants on behalf of Tribal law enforcement and assist in searching for missing children. She said the bill strengthens coordination between tribal and federal authorities and helps keep children safe.
Assessments
The evidence shows Teresa Leger Fernandez took same-term federal legislative and public-safety actions related to protecting vulnerable communities, including violence against Indigenous women and children and tribal law-enforcement coordination. However, the cited actions are not direct gun-violence measures and do not show enacted policy that substantially fulfills the promise to protect communities and families from gun violence. This supports partial credit for related safety efforts, with an effort badge for serious but incomplete action.
