I continue to work toward bipartisan solutions that will make health care more affordable, lower the costs of prescription drugs, prevent gun violence, modernize our infrastructure, reduce transportation challenges, and support our veterans who give so much for our country.
Work toward bipartisan solutions to prevent gun violence.
Occurrences
I made a promise to my community that I would act.
My work moving the discussion forward in gun-violence prevention—through dialogue and, even more important, through listening—is how I will uniquely approach other important issues as well.
Evidence
Since taking her first oath of office in January of 2019, she has sought bipartisan solutions to end gun violence. Her legislative achievements include the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act, the first comprehensive gun safety legislation in over three decades.
McBath, Vice Chair of the House Gun Violence Prevention Task Force, joined Chairman Mike Thompson to reintroduce H.R. 8, a bipartisan background-check bill co-sponsored by Republicans and Democrats. The release also says McBath had introduced FERPO, identical to a bipartisan Senate bill.
McBath helped lead passage of H.R. 8 in the House and was an original co-sponsor. The release says the bill passed 240-190 and marked the first time Congress passed a bill to ensure all firearm sales would be subject to background checks.
McBath introduced the Federal Extreme Risk Protection Order Act of 2019, described as identical to a bipartisan Senate bill introduced by Senators Richard Blumenthal and Lindsey Graham.
Assessments
McBath promised to work toward bipartisan solutions to prevent gun violence, a process-oriented federal House promise rather than a pledge to single-handedly enact a specific bill. During the relevant House service period, she introduced and co-sponsored bipartisan gun-violence prevention measures, helped advance H.R. 8 through the House, and her official record credits her work as part of the broader Bipartisan Safer Communities Act achievement. Because she materially advanced bipartisan gun-safety legislation while serving in the office tied to the 2020 campaign context, the promise is best judged delivered in the same term.
