...to ensuring access to quality healthcare and education... I will fight for the values and freedoms that define us.
Fight to ensure access to quality healthcare and education.
Occurrences
Parents must have the opportunity to place their children in the educational environment that best meets their needs and gives those children the best chance at success. To do this, we must encourage healthy competition among schools inclusive of public, private, and homeschool options and ensure that funding follows the student. Further, any federal education funding should come in the form of block grants to the states, allowing a greater level of local control over how such funds are deployed in the classroom.
We need to explore price and cost innovations around direct primary care and preventative medicine while protecting patient-doctor relationships. We can find cost savings by increasing competition, negotiating prescription drug prices, and tightening work requirements for able-bodied Medicaid recipients.
Evidence
Rep. Begich introduced H.R. 4250, the SOLES Act, which would require higher Medicare outpatient payments for sole community hospitals in Alaska and Hawaii.
Begich said the Secure Rural Schools reauthorization would help ensure students in remote areas have access to quality education; he also said he was a proud co-sponsor of the House companion bill.
The House passed H.R. 6703, the Lower Health Care Premiums for All Americans Act; Begich voted Yea.
Assessments
Begich has taken same-term federal actions aligned with the promise, including introducing healthcare access legislation for Alaska and Hawaii sole community hospitals, co-sponsoring or supporting rural education funding reauthorization, and voting for a healthcare premium bill. However, the promise is broad and outcome-oriented, and the evidence shows legislative effort and partial advancement rather than a completed, comprehensive delivery of ensured access to quality healthcare and education.
