...to supporting sustainable fisheries, I will fight for the values and freedoms that define us.
Support sustainable fisheries.
Occurrences
Limiting bycatch and overfishing; investing in ongoing research focused on ocean food chains, currents, population variance, genetics; and predator monitoring and control will all help ensure that Alaska’s fisheries remain reliable and predictable sources of sustenance, enjoyment, and revenue for generations to come.
Evidence
Action: Mr. Begich introduced the following bill; which was referred to the Committee on Natural Resources. Short Title: Bycatch Reduction and Research Act of 2026. Full Title: To address data and research gaps to improve marine environmental data collection, particularly in the Bering Sea, Aleutian Islands, and Gulf of Alaska, prioritize technology that supports research, bycatch reduction, and marine benthic habitat in Alaska fisheries, advance and streamline electronic monitoring and electronic reporting in United States fisheries, and establish a fund to provide financial assistance for fishermen purchasing gear and technology aimed at reducing bycatch and marine benthic habitat contact from trawl fishing gear.
"Alaska has led the nation in sustainable fisheries, but we need to make sure the next generation has the tools to carry that legacy forward. ... This program is an investment in young people who will keep our seafood economy competitive and sustainable for decades to come. With high start-up costs and fewer young people entering the trade, this program is more important than ever and I’m proud to lead this effort"
"The Bycatch Reduction and Research Act is an important first step toward putting Alaska fisheries on a more sustainable path by addressing the lack of abundance and impacts of trawl bycatch." Begich added that the bill "supports innovation" by modernizing electronic monitoring, improving genetic stock identification, and investing in new gear and technology that reduce bycatch and habitat impacts.
Assessments
Begich promised to support sustainable fisheries, a broad support-oriented commitment rather than a promise to enact a specific law. During his current House term, he introduced the Bycatch Reduction and Research Act of 2026 and co-led legislation to reauthorize the Young Fishermen's Development Act, both directly tied to fisheries sustainability, bycatch reduction, monitoring, habitat impacts, and long-term seafood workforce viability. These actions materially satisfy the promise in the federal office context even though the cited bills had not yet become law.
